In medieval Volterra, tower building competitions were held. The taller the tower, the wealthier the owners. The remains of this building competition, the so-called "family towers," can still be found in many Tuscan towns today.
In the strategy game VOLTERRA, wealth plays no role. Here, the towers grow taller thanks to the tactical skill of their builders. The pieces on the board are stacked one upon another, turn by turn, and the playing pieces do their best to defend the towers of their own color. On the shrinking playing field, the players continue to build until the pieces can no longer move.
