In ALTO, victory isn't just about skillful stacking, but also clever forward planning. Stack your discs as high as possible, collect valuable points, and keep a close eye on the movement tiles. Because every move changes the board and opens up new possibilities – or blocks them permanently.
At the start of the game, the 16 movement tiles are laid out in a 4x4 grid with the light side facing up. One disc is placed on each tile, regardless of its color. On their turn, a player moves any disc – no matter which player it belongs to. The respective movement tile determines whether an orthogonal, diagonal, or combined movement is allowed. This gradually creates impressive towers, whose topmost discs are moved further. In special situations, entire towers can even be shifted.
The special trick of ALTO lies in the movement tiles. Whenever a disc leaves a space, the tile underneath changes. After its first use, it is flipped to the dark side and gains a new movement rule. After its second use, it disappears completely from the game. No more discs can be moved from this space, but discs can still be moved onto it. This changes the game board turn by turn and requires all players to rethink their tactics.
As soon as no more discs can be moved, the final scoring begins. Each of your own discs counts one point. Additionally, each disc receives another point for each disc that is stacked below it. The higher your discs are stacked, the more points you score. The player who has built their towers most cleverly and made the best use of the changes on the board wins the game.
